Amazon's immediate next steps involve introducing drone deliveries to major urban areas such as Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise, with further rollouts anticipated later this year. It's important to note that Amazon's expansion metrics count each city and town served rather than each physical launch site. A single Prime Air facility can cover an area of approximately 175 square miles, enabling it to cater to multiple communities. However, not every address within designated ZIP codes will automatically qualify for drone delivery, and a comprehensive list of the nearly 500 new locations has not yet been publicly released. Customers whose addresses are eligible will see drone delivery as an option during their online shopping and checkout process.
The service is designed to deliver products weighing 5 pounds or less that can fit into a large shoebox, covering over 60 percent of Amazon's most frequently purchased items. This includes a diverse range of goods, from essential toiletries and groceries to cosmetics, medications, and high-value electronics such as iPhones, AirPods, Samsung Galaxy phones, and Ring doorbells. Amazon aims for these deliveries to arrive within 30 minutes, though typical delivery times are closer to an hour. Prime members benefit from free drone delivery on orders exceeding $50, while smaller orders incur a $2.99 fee. Non-Prime customers face a $4.99 charge.
The journey towards widespread drone delivery has been a prolonged one for Amazon. The concept was first introduced by Jeff Bezos in 2013, with actual deliveries commencing in 2022. In October 2025, two Amazon drones collided with a crane in Tolleson, Arizona, leading to federal investigations and a temporary suspension of local services. The following month, another FAA investigation was initiated after a drone severed an internet cable in Waco, Texas. Fortunately, neither incident resulted in injuries, but they highlight the need for continuous vigilance and improvement in drone safety protocols.
Amazon is not alone in this burgeoning market; the drone delivery landscape is becoming increasingly competitive. DoorDash, having recently secured its Part 135 certification, launched DoorDash Air and is developing its own drone fleet to integrate with its existing delivery network. Alphabet's Wing has already surpassed one million commercial drone deliveries and is collaborating with Walmart to establish a vast drone delivery network. Additionally, Uber Eats has partnered with Zipline, a company with over two million global deliveries, to enhance its drone delivery capabilities. The intensifying competition coincides with new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on foreign-made drones and components, which may favor companies that emphasize domestic manufacturing, like DoorDash with its American-designed aircraft.
For more than a decade, drone delivery has largely been a futuristic concept.
