Architectural Reimagination: From Wastewater Plant to Public Space














A disused sewage treatment facility within South Korea's Sihwa Industrial Complex has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis, thanks to the visionary work of A.CO.LAB Architects. This transformation, dubbed 'Be-Fore', breathes new life into an abandoned industrial landscape, meticulously preserving its raw, historical essence while introducing subtle architectural elements that invite public interaction and diverse activities. The project consciously avoids erasing the site's past, instead integrating its existing robust structures and unique spatial qualities into a dynamic new community asset.
The initial concept for the site envisioned a water-themed park, but its inherent industrial character and the sheer scale of the existing infrastructure guided the architects towards a different path. Rather than imposing a completely new identity, A.CO.LAB Architects chose a strategy of thoughtful preservation, allowing the original forms, rough textures, and vastness of the former purification plant to remain central to its appeal. This approach ensures that the revamped space maintains an authentic dialogue with its history, offering visitors a unique experience that bridges past and present.
The intervention was guided by a philosophy of adding only what was essential to enable new uses. The project initially focused on ten condensing tanks, but this was refined to five, allowing for a more concentrated effort on highlighting the internal structure and organization of the former wastewater system. By exposing previously hidden civil engineering components and re-establishing connections between different zones of the site, the renovation has carved out an open, experiential pathway that guides visitors through the original water purification facilities, revealing their impressive scale and intricate design.
For the newly introduced elements, A.CO.LAB Architects Studio carefully selected materials based on their lightness, ease of handling, and temporary nature. Standard construction materials such as timber frames, patterned steel plates, aluminum, and acrylic panels were chosen to create new architectural features that complement, rather than overshadow, the existing industrial backdrop. Components like a spiral staircase, central columns, protective overhangs, viewing platforms, and translucent coverings were incorporated as straightforward additions. These elements facilitate movement and occupation while seamlessly blending with the site's inherent industrial aesthetic, ensuring the new functions are supported without compromising the historical integrity.
This deliberate restraint in intervention also proved instrumental in managing the project within budgetary constraints, showcasing how innovative design can flourish even with limited resources. Instead of relying on costly, permanent constructions or intricate architectural systems, 'Be-Fore' utilizes minimal gestures and readily available materials to forge fresh connections between individuals and the re-envisioned industrial environment. The project thus stands as a testament to the power of sensitive design, transforming a forgotten space into a vibrant hub where history and contemporary life intertwine.
