Pliskin Architecture has expertly renovated a Brooklyn rowhouse, transforming it into a modern two-family residence that harmonizes with its surroundings. The Leonard Street Rowhouse, completed in 2025, spans 6,000 square feet in Greenpoint, skillfully combining a townhouse and a penthouse behind a unified brick facade. This innovative design, featuring a slanted, corbeled depression, draws inspiration from traditional Brooklyn aesthetics while presenting a contemporary interpretation. The project showcases a thoughtful blend of historical elements and cutting-edge design, creating a distinctive dwelling that stands out yet belongs.
The architects meticulously considered the varied architectural styles of the neighborhood, which include homes with blue siding and red brick. Their approach aimed to fill a contextual gap with a new facade that honors the area's original brick structures while subtly delineating the two separate homes. This dual objective was achieved through a unique brickwork pattern that creates a welcoming, shared entryway for both residences. Built upon an existing foundation and utilizing much of the site's original masonry, the light sand-colored brick facade system incorporates a custom attachment method to minimize thermal bridging, demonstrating a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable building practices.

The design's facade, characterized by an interlocking brick entry and a subtle slanted recess, pays homage to classic Brooklyn rowhouses while offering a fresh, modern aesthetic. Beyond its visual appeal, the building's envelope is engineered for superior energy performance, incorporating Ipe wood accents, high-performance aluminum windows, and precast concrete sills and coping stones. The facade cleverly distinguishes the two homes within the unified structure: a prominent picture window and a recessed glass top guide the penthouse towards the sky, while intricate brick details anchor the townhouse firmly to the ground.
