Bump Studio Transforms Genova Apartment with 'Tetris' Renovation

Unlocking Spatial Potential: A Tetris-Inspired Home Transformation
From Fragmented Layout to Fluid Living: Reimagining the Apartment's Structure
Initially, the apartment suffered from a series of irregularly shaped rooms connected by a restrictive central corridor. This arrangement lacked the adaptability required for modern lifestyles, creating a sense of confinement rather than openness. The 'Tetris' renovation directly addresses this by replacing the rigid, segmented layout with an expansive, open-plan living area. This new design prioritizes continuity and flexibility, allowing residents to experience the space in a more dynamic and interconnected manner.
The Central Yellow Volume: A Multifunctional Core Redefining Space
At the architectural heart of the redesigned apartment lies a distinct, custom-crafted yellow volume. This sculptural element serves a dual purpose: it subtly delineates the living area from the kitchen while simultaneously reconfiguring the apartment's internal geometry. Its artfully folded contours are a direct response to the existing non-parallel walls, ingeniously bridging previously isolated zones. One side of this vibrant structure cleverly integrates practical storage, including a wardrobe and an entrance console, discreetly concealing access to the private quarters of the home. The opposing side, thoughtfully suspended from an existing beam, evolves into an open shelving system, accented by a curtain in the same brilliant yellow hue. This textile layer offers versatile control over spatial perception, privacy, and natural light throughout the day. A continuous yellow resin strip, meticulously embedded in the flooring, extends the visual language of the volume, emphatically marking its role as a connective threshold between distinct functional zones within the apartment.
Vibrant Hues and Architectural Forms: A Symphony of Interlocking Elements
Beyond the yellow curtain, the kitchen space is powerfully anchored by a central island finished in a striking sodalite blue. Its projecting geometric form immediately captures attention, serving as the focal point while seamlessly incorporating essential functional elements such as the sink, dishwasher, and a cantilevered snack counter. The island's reflective surface elegantly interacts with the fluctuating natural light, introducing a sense of expanded depth within the compact area. In thoughtful contrast, the kitchen units lining the rear wall adhere to a more understated material and color scheme, characterized by minimalist surfaces, the absence of overhead cabinetry, and a continuous shelf that intelligently combines display and task lighting. A discreet door, integrated within the yellow volume, provides access to the circulation path leading to the bedrooms, bathroom, and ancillary spaces. The master bedroom introduces a captivating ottanio green element through a thoughtfully designed, lowered walk-in wardrobe, strategically positioned beneath existing ceiling decorations. This same verdant shade gracefully extends behind the bed, creating an integrated headboard surface. A circular opening allows natural light to flow between the bedroom and dressing area, complemented by matching curtains that offer the flexibility to fully separate these spaces, thereby cultivating a more intimate atmosphere. In the bathroom, the design skillfully navigates the apartment's original irregular geometry through a newly defined back wall featuring two recessed niches, precisely designed for the washbasin and shower. Diverse finishes are employed to create visual interplay between these two alcoves, while horizontal resin surfaces, set at varying heights, form the countertop and shower base, further underscoring the project's foundational emphasis on layered geometric relationships and spatial articulation.
A Cohesive System: The Art of Spatial Assembly
Through the thoughtful integration of color, meticulously crafted custom furnishings, and strategic spatial interventions, Bump Studio's 'Tetris' project successfully transforms a complex and challenging apartment into a remarkably coherent architectural system. Echoing the principles of its namesake game, every element within this design is precisely positioned within a larger, interconnected composition. Volumes, functions, and materials are intricately interlocked, culminating in the creation of a truly contemporary and highly functional domestic environment.
