A Contemporary Home Integrated with Nature in Paarl Winelands

Nestled within the picturesque Val de Vie Estate in the Paarl Winelands, the House Between Gardens is a masterful fusion of contemporary living and natural beauty. This project by Studio BHD reinterprets local architectural traditions, crafting a home that doesn't just sit in its environment but becomes an integral part of it, surrounded by a rich tapestry of gardens.

Seamlessly Blending Architecture and Landscape for Modern Living

Embracing the Val de Vie Estate Landscape: A Design Philosophy

The House Between Gardens is strategically located within the stunning Val de Vie Estate, an area celebrated for its natural splendor. Studio BHD's vision was to create a family dwelling that is deeply connected to its surroundings. This connection is achieved through a design philosophy that prioritizes the integration of living spaces with the vibrant outdoor environment, ensuring that residents experience the beauty of the Winelands from every vantage point.

Reinterpreting Architectural Heritage: The H-Plan's Modern Twist

Drawing inspiration from the historical Cape vernacular H-plan, the architects have innovatively adapted this layout to suit contemporary needs. This reinterpretation allows for a dynamic interplay between various internal and external areas. The H-plan facilitates the creation of distinct yet interconnected zones, optimizing both privacy and communal living while maximizing natural light and ventilation. This thoughtful design ensures a comfortable and elegant lifestyle.

The Art of Connection: Indoor and Outdoor Harmony

A defining characteristic of this residence is its fluid transition between interior comfort and exterior charm. The design consciously blurs the lines separating the indoors from the outdoors, creating a living experience where the home is not merely adjacent to nature but truly nestled within a sequence of meticulously designed gardens. This fosters a sense of tranquility and an intimate connection with the natural world.

A Sanctuary of Green Spaces: The Essence of the Gardens

The concept of 'House Between Gardens' is central to its identity. The property is thoughtfully enveloped by a collection of diverse garden spaces, each offering a unique micro-environment. These green sanctuaries serve as extensions of the living areas, providing serene backdrops, recreational zones, and intimate retreats. The gardens are not just decorative; they are functional components of the home's ecosystem, enhancing biodiversity and providing sensory richness.

Contemporary Family Living: Comfort Meets Elegance

Designed with the modern family in mind, the 500 square meter home offers spacious and versatile living arrangements. Every detail, from the material selection to the spatial organization, is geared towards creating an environment that is both luxurious and practical. The architecture supports a lifestyle that values both shared family moments and individual solitude, all within a setting of refined elegance. This residence, completed in 2025, sets a new standard for sophisticated family homes in the region.

Obra Blanca 2026: Fostering Innovation and Collaboration in Architecture and Interior Design

The annual Obra Blanca exhibition is a significant gathering for professionals in architecture and interior design, providing a unique platform for material exploration and industry networking. At its seventh installment, held at Expo Santa Fe in Mexico City, the event attracted more than 23,000 attendees, emphasizing the critical interplay between tangible material properties and practical architectural application. Participants could experience a diverse array of textures and finishes firsthand, observing how different lighting conditions alter their appearance, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of their potential uses through direct interactions with manufacturers and experts.

This year's exhibition was a vibrant hub of activity, featuring 190 exhibitors spread across 13 pavilions and covering an expansive 28,620 square meters. The showcased products and finishes catered to both architectural and interior design needs. Beyond the exhibition floor, Obra Blanca 2026 offered a robust program of conferences, panel discussions, and technical workshops. A new digital utility, OB ESPECIFICA, was also introduced, designed to streamline the process of accessing and organizing product information for professionals, both during and after the event.

A core strength of Obra Blanca lies in its dedication to fostering professional dialogue and collaboration. The event convened 70 specialists for three international lectures, four national talks, four international forums, and twelve technical sessions. Collaborating with 32 strategic partners, the agenda transformed the gathering into more than just a product showcase. It became a vital forum for sharing insights and tackling the pressing issues facing the industry, as highlighted by Christele Harrouk, Editor-in-Chief of ArchDaily. The Espacio Obra Blanca, curated by Augusto Quijano Axle, further enriched this exchange with expert interviews and a dynamic CMF exhibition, 'La tendencia es emocionar,' showcasing innovative material and color trends from twelve design firms.

The integration of direct material interaction, extensive professional exchanges, and advanced technical resources positions Obra Blanca as an indispensable event for advancing architectural and interior design practices. By facilitating a deep understanding of materials and encouraging collaborative problem-solving, the exhibition empowers professionals to address complex design challenges effectively. This dynamic environment not only accelerates innovation within the industry but also shapes a future where design solutions are more informed, sustainable, and impactful. The next edition is scheduled for October 12 to 14, 2027, in Mexico City, promising continued growth and influence in the field.
