Situated in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, the Doutor Leite Lopes State Airport, designed by Bacco Arquitetos Associados and completed in 2026, represents a paradigm shift in airport design. Lead Architects Marcelo Barbosa and Julio Cesar Corbucci steered this ambitious project, which spans an impressive 10,840 square meters. The core of its innovative construction lies in the extensive use of glued laminated timber (glulam), a material chosen for its low carbon footprint and its ability to evoke the regional agro-industrial landscape. The architectural vision aimed to convert what is typically a 'non-place' into a dynamic urban element, deeply embedded within the fabric of Ribeirão Preto. The airport's structure, supported by a collaborative team including Laura Poggio and Micael Dambros for coordination, and specialized engineering firms like Formato Projetos & Desenhos Técnicos Ltda for electrical systems and Crosslam and AR Estruturas Engenharia e Montagem for structural elements, reflects a commitment to both environmental responsibility and aesthetic appeal. The result is a welcoming environment that encourages social interaction, departing from the often sterile atmosphere of modern transportation hubs. The project also incorporates a landscape design by VG Landscape, further enhancing its integration with the natural surroundings.
