Ford is setting a new course for its electric vehicle future by integrating Apple Maps into its Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Ford's Vision for Connected Electric Vehicles Takes Shape
On July 23, 2026, Ford officially announced its collaboration with Apple to embed Apple Maps into its forthcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. This innovative integration is set to debut with a new midsize electric pickup truck, projected to retail at an accessible price point of $30,000 in 2027. The partnership will bring advanced navigation features directly into Ford's electric vehicles, including precise turn-by-turn directions with natural language, real-time traffic updates, incident reporting, and intelligent search functions with detailed location information. Furthermore, the system will offer optimized routing specifically for electric vehicles, alongside battery preconditioning to ensure peak performance.
A notable aspect of this integration is that drivers will not require an iPhone to utilize the embedded Apple Maps features, although Apple CarPlay will continue to be an available option. This ensures broad accessibility and convenience for all Ford EV owners.
Beyond navigation, Ford is also working closely with Apple to develop the next iteration of its BlueCruise driver-assist system. This enhanced system will leverage "road-level information" from Apple Maps to deliver a more seamless hands-free highway driving experience, guiding vehicles from on-ramp to off-ramp with increased precision. Meanwhile, Ford's dedicated autonomous driving subsidiary, Latitude AI, is independently developing an eyes-off unsupervised driving system, which the company anticipates will be ready by 2028. Ford has explicitly stated that Apple's involvement is limited to mapping and is not extended to the development of Ford's self-driving technology. Amy Mast, a spokesperson for Ford, clarified, "Ford is developing our next-generation ADAS in-house through Latitude AI, Ford’s wholly owned autonomy subsidiary. Apple Maps will be an important mapping enabler that supports the experience, while Ford continues to own the vehicle hardware, software and driving system."
