Moradavaga's Playful Urban Connectors Foster Community Engagement in Vienna

In an innovative initiative to revitalize urban spaces, the creative studio Moradavaga has introduced “The Outsiders,” a dynamic collection of mobile, interactive elements designed for Vienna’s Hirschstetten neighborhood. Commissioned by ROOMING INN for their Living Lab project, these versatile structures serve as both communication devices and adaptable public furniture, promoting social connection, community involvement, and informal gatherings. This project aims to transform the public realm around a former kindergarten, now a vibrant cultural hub, into a more engaging and inclusive environment.

The ROOMING INN initiative is dedicated to integrating art into public spaces through temporary installations that re-imagine urban activation. Guided by the philosophy that “the city begins at your front door,” the program develops projects that cultivate accessible, shared, and inclusive urban settings. This includes implementing traffic-calming measures, establishing open gathering areas, and creating spaces conducive to play, movement, and daily interaction, thereby fostering a stronger sense of community.

Central to ROOMING INN’s Living Lab program is the transformation of a former municipal kindergarten and its expansive 3,000-square-meter garden into a consumption-free zone dedicated to collective urban life. This transformed site hosts a variety of activities such as gardening, reading, building, cooking, and collaborative stewardship, providing an environment where individuals of all ages can converge and participate in the daily rhythms of community living. It's a place where different generations can connect and engage with each other through shared experiences.

Responding to this vision, Moradavaga developed The Outsiders—a series of wheeled structures that ingeniously blend the functionality of movable tables, elevated platforms, and communication conduits. Each unit is fitted with speaking and listening tubes, allowing them to operate independently or be configured in various combinations to stimulate user interaction and foster collective engagement. These elements are crafted to encourage exploration and participation within the community spaces.

These mobile installations are not confined to the boundaries of the former kindergarten. They are designed to traverse the surrounding Hirschstetten neighborhood, becoming integral parts of workshops, public events, and other community activities. Their inherent mobility enables them to interact with both the physical urban landscape and its residents, effectively extending the Living Lab’s influence into the broader public sphere. The collaborative effort for this project included contributions from Lola Burdin, Verena Maria Huber, Nina McNab, and Gabriel Waringer, alongside Moradavaga.

Artistic Integration: The Bridge as a Canvas and Seating Area

A distinctive feature of the bridge is its dual functionality. One side is ingeniously crafted to serve as an easel-like surface, inviting visitors to sketch the picturesque mountains, winding creek, and charming townscape. The opposite side provides a continuous backrest, allowing users to comfortably take in the surroundings or watch artists at work, fostering a sense of shared experience between observers and creators.

Urban Context and Connectivity: A Node in Moganshan's Network

Strategically situated within a vibrant waterfront commercial district, which includes the Liaoyuan Theater, various retail outlets, and dining establishments, the Easel Bridge plays a crucial role in Moganshan Town’s “slow-mobility” network. It seamlessly blends the natural elements of mountains and water with the urban fabric, informing the spatial logic of its design and enhancing the town’s public realm.

Architectural Innovation: Materials and Modular Design

XBTW OFFICE employed a thoughtful combination of materials in the bridge’s construction. The main structure utilizes corrugated metal panels and circular steel tubes, providing a lightweight yet robust framework. The easel-facing side features translucent frosted corrugated material, creating a soft, inviting surface for artistic expression. In contrast, the opposing side incorporates warm teak backrests, offering a tactile contrast and comfortable seating experience within the metallic design.

Structural Philosophy: Space Over Load-Bearing

The structural design of the Easel Bridge prioritizes spatial and programmatic intent over strict load-bearing requirements. It employs a beam system that allows the four inclined planes to function independently, enabling greater flexibility in shaping the user’s interaction with the space. The bridge is ingeniously composed of 2-meter modules, each subtly rotated by 2 to 3 degrees.
