The 5.5-acre elevated civic area, strategically positioned on the riverfront between 4th and 6th Streets in the heart of downtown Louisville, offers expansive vistas of the Ohio River, bridging the city's commercial core with its natural waterfront. The project's primary goal is to convert the Belvedere into a modern public destination that caters to daily activities, moving beyond its previous event-centric function. A key objective involves re-establishing its intrinsic urban connectivity and vitality within an enriched green environment. This substantial site, equivalent to roughly four American football fields, is slated to become an urban park characterized by improved accessibility, extensive plant life, enhanced connections to the waterfront, and thoughtfully designed entrances intended to attract visitors throughout the day and into the evening.

The revamped design is a product of a collaborative, public participatory process, with community consultations shaping its development. Two prominent features of the design are a central pavilion and an intricate winding pathway. The 'Firefly Pavilion,' a nod to Kentucky's diverse firefly population, is conceived as a versatile stage for both everyday use and larger cultural performances. The surrounding landscape will evolve into a lush park, offering ample shade and designated areas for recreation, social gatherings, and quiet contemplation. This verdant expanse will be traversed by the 'Firefly Path,' an meandering route inviting visitors to explore the park at their leisure and from various perspectives. Construction is anticipated to commence in the autumn of 2026, with the grand opening planned for 2030.
