HD House: Harmonizing Modern Living with Nature in Sesimbra

The HD House, a distinctive residential project by Desvão Atelier, masterfully blends contemporary design with its picturesque natural setting in Sesimbra, Portugal. Completed in 2024, this 2852 sq ft home is strategically positioned to capitalize on the gentle topography and stunning vistas of the Arrábida Natural Park. Its design prioritizes natural light, spatial autonomy, and the integration of natural materials, offering a serene living experience.
Nestled within a residential enclave, the HD House occupies a trapezoidal plot bordered by an access road to the east and neighboring structures to the north and south. The architects at Desvão Atelier ingeniously utilized the existing gentle slope to elevate the structure by one meter above street level. This elevation not only minimized the need for extensive earthworks but also significantly enhanced the home's visual prominence and spatial independence from its surroundings. The result is a residence that feels both connected to and distinct from its environment.
The location of HD House near the Arrábida Natural Park is a defining feature, providing a breathtaking natural backdrop. The landscape is rich with cork oaks, holm oaks, and diverse low-lying vegetation, characteristic of Portugal's montado ecosystem. This natural beauty is woven into the home's experience, with design choices aimed at framing these views and bringing the outdoors in. The extensive use of natural light further connects the interiors with the vibrant external environment, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.
Inside, the design showcases a thoughtful selection of materials, including wood and concrete, which contribute to both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the home. These materials are chosen for their durability, natural beauty, and ability to complement the surrounding landscape. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the material palette, creates a warm and inviting living space that is both modern and rooted in its natural context. The project was led by Frederico Vicente, with the photographic documentation expertly captured by Lourenço Teixeira de Abreu, highlighting the architectural nuances and the natural harmony of the residence.
The HD House stands as a testament to harmonious architectural design, where modern living is thoughtfully integrated with the tranquility and beauty of nature. The elevated position, panoramic views of the Arrábida Natural Park, and careful material selection collectively define this unique Portuguese dwelling.
