HoverAir Versa Drone Secures FCC Approval, Bypassing Foreign Drone Ban




HoverAir's groundbreaking Versa, a camera and drone hybrid, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first consumer quadcopter to gain approval for sale in the U.S. despite the prevailing FCC ban on foreign drones. This innovative device, which functions as a handheld gimbal camera and can transform into a drone with an attachable Flight Kit, marks a pivotal moment for international drone manufacturers looking to enter the American market. The strategic design of the Flight Kit, specifically its lack of radio frequency transmitters, is credited with enabling the Versa to circumvent the stringent regulatory hurdles that have previously grounded similar products.
Since December 2025, the Federal Communications Commission has imposed a ban on new equipment authorizations for drones manufactured outside the United States. This regulation had previously prevented HoverAir's Aqua drone from reaching American consumers. However, the Versa utilizes a distinct approach. As a standalone unit, it operates as a sophisticated handheld vlogging camera, similar to popular models like DJI's Osmo Pocket 3. The transformation into a flying drone occurs when the separate Flight Kit, comprising propellers, is magnetically attached to the camera body.
A representative from HoverAir clarified the technicality that allows the Versa to bypass the ban: the Flight Kit itself does not contain any RF transmitters. This design choice means the Flight Kit does not require independent FCC certification. Instead, it connects to the camera for data and power through magnets and small pogo pins, avoiding the typical scrutiny associated with drone components that transmit radio frequencies. Consequently, while the camera and its remote control appear in the FCC database, the Flight Kit does not.
The Versa is engineered for solo content creators and vloggers, offering features such as stabilized video recording at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, a generously sized Type 1/1.3 image sensor, and an intuitive OLED touchscreen. Impressively, HoverAir claims the device boasts up to 17.5 stops of dynamic range, a specification that would position it ahead of many existing vlogging cameras, including DJI's newer Osmo Pocket 4P.
Furthermore, when the Flight Kit is affixed, the combined unit weighs a mere 230 grams. This weight is strategically below the FAA's 250-gram registration threshold, meaning recreational drone pilots are not required to register the Versa or equip it with a Remote ID transmitter for flight. Commercial operators, however, would still need to acquire an external Remote ID transmitter separately.
Despite this successful clearance, the situation remains fluid. The FCC has, in recent instances, rescinded approvals shortly after granting them. Therefore, the long-term status of the Versa's approval is not absolutely guaranteed. Nevertheless, if this approval stands, the HoverAir Versa will be recognized as the first consumer drone to successfully launch in the U.S. market since the implementation of the foreign drone ban. The Versa is currently available for backing on Indiegogo, with initial pricing starting at $449 for the camera unit through August 20, after which it will increase to $499.
