Innovating Street Vending: Mobile Infrastructure Redefines Urban Commerce in India















"Laari Futures," a visionary undertaking by Chaal Chaal Agency, reimagines the essence of street vending through innovative design and community collaboration. This initiative, which builds upon the comprehensive "Atlas of (In)Constant Infrastructures" research, meticulously documented 78 distinct street vending archetypes across a dozen Indian metropolises. The project highlights how the ubiquitous vending cart transcends its basic function as a mere conveyance or display surface, instead serving as a pivotal element that structures commercial interactions, defines the vendor's presence in public spaces, and establishes dynamic, temporary retail fronts within the everyday urban fabric.
Stemming from this foundational research, the design methodology for "Laari Futures" involves a thoughtful re-examination of existing vending models. The goal is to amplify their inherent logic and functionality without imposing rigid structures or excessive formalization. This inclusive approach culminated in an intensive community engagement process, specifically involving women vendors from the Sathwara group in Bhuj. Through a series of co-mapping exercises, collaborative design sessions, and consensus-driven development, the project ensures that the solutions are deeply rooted in the practical needs and experiences of the vendors themselves.

The resulting prototypes, such as Nano, Vachlo, and Motto, address critical aspects like navigation, seating, shade, storage, and multi-level display. These advancements transform the cart into a sophisticated spatial device that enhances vendor-customer relationships and optimizes street-edge utilization, all without requiring permanent infrastructure, thus maintaining the essential mobility of the "laari."
Integrating Technology and Sustainability in Mobile Marketplaces
The initial developments from Chaal Chaal Agency, including prototypes like Nano, Vachlo, and Motto, represent a significant advancement in mobile market infrastructure. These designs reconsider fundamental aspects of vending, such as how carts are navigated, seating arrangements for vendors and customers, effective shading, ample storage, and versatile multi-level displays. With financial backing from the Ammodo Architecture Award for Local Scale, the project is expanding its scope to include fresh produce vending and the incorporation of small-scale technological innovations. A key development is the integration of solar energy systems, designed to power motorized misting units. These units are crucial for preserving fresh produce, thereby significantly reducing spoilage caused by heat exposure. Furthermore, the same solar systems provide essential lighting, phone charging capabilities, and operate fans, drastically improving the working conditions for vendors throughout their day. This holistic approach ensures that "Laari Futures" remains mobile, adaptable, and deeply attuned to the specific spatial conditions and daily routines of street life, effectively positioning simple, resilient infrastructure at the forefront of urban commerce, enhancing comfort, capacity, and efficiency for vendors.
