Lion Green Road Housing Development Recognized with Prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize

The Lion Green Road residential complex in South London, developed through the joint expertise of Mary Duggan Architects and Ruff Architects, has received the esteemed RIBA Stirling Prize for 2026, marking it as the United Kingdom's most outstanding new architectural achievement. This development, situated in Coulsdon, addresses the critical demand for national housing by offering 157 homes within five structures seamlessly linked by shared verdant areas.
This award represents a notable recognition of a residential initiative, being only the fourth housing scheme to claim the prize in its three-decade history. The design's innovative approach to urban living integrates both private and social housing units, strategically positioned on a challenging sloping site that once served as a car park. The buildings' distinctive star-shaped plans ensure abundant natural light and varied perspectives, while a cohesive material palette of three brick types unifies the aesthetic and fosters a strong sense of community through shared outdoor environments.
RIBA President Chris Williamson lauded the project for its ability to deliver high-density housing without compromising spatial quality, creating a unique garden neighborhood that balances privacy with communal interaction and connection to nature. This thoughtful and resource-efficient architecture showcases how even difficult terrains can be transformed into distinctive and welcoming homes, setting a new benchmark for future residential developments in the UK. The Lion Green Road project stood out from a shortlist of six, also celebrated alongside other notable architectural works for special awards, reinforcing its position as a beacon of architectural excellence and social responsibility.
The triumph of the Lion Green Road housing development serves as a testament to the power of visionary architecture in fostering vibrant communities and addressing societal needs. It exemplifies how thoughtful design can not only overcome environmental challenges but also enrich lives by creating spaces that promote well-being, connection, and a sustainable future. This project underscores the importance of innovative housing solutions that inspire and uplift, proving that architectural excellence can be a force for positive change in the urban landscape.
