MABI ARCHITECTS Transforms Historic Japanese Bathhouse into Modern Men's Spa

MABI ARCHITECTS has skillfully transformed the historic Enmeiyu public bathhouse, originally constructed in 1983 by Yoshiji Takehara, into a modern men's bathing sanctuary known as Shizunoyu Fukushima. This ambitious project aimed to breathe new life into the aging structure while meticulously preserving its distinctive architectural heritage. The renovation successfully merges traditional design elements with contemporary amenities, creating a unique space for relaxation and community engagement.

Historic Japanese Bathhouse Reimagined for Modern Wellness

In a remarkable architectural endeavor, MABI ARCHITECTS embarked on the transformation of the Enmeiyu public bathhouse, a cherished landmark from 1983, into the sophisticated Shizunoyu Fukushima. Located in Osaka, Japan, this project stands as a testament to the seamless integration of historical preservation and modern functionality. The design team, led by MABI ARCHITECTS, focused on retaining the bathhouse's iconic curved forms and intricate tilework, which are central to its original character. The washing areas, in particular, saw a careful restoration where as many original tiles as possible were preserved, ensuring a continuous link to the building's rich past. Complementing these conserved features, a suite of new facilities has been introduced, including a refreshing cold plunge pool, a state-of-the-art sauna, an expansive outdoor bathing zone, a serene indoor relaxation area, and a stylish bar counter. These contemporary additions are thoughtfully interwoven with the existing materials and spatial design, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. The signage for the renovated facility was crafted by Yusuke Sakurai, with the logo designed by Hiroaki Endo of NEWMAN Inc. The construction was expertly carried out by Kikuchi Soken Co., Ltd., with collaborative efforts from SCIENCE Inc. Tile Capsule (BOWCS Inc.) and Nakamura Inc. The stunning visuals of the revitalized space were captured by dig photograph. The new Shizunoyu Fukushima is envisioned not merely as a bathing facility but as a vibrant social hub, continuing its legacy as a cherished gathering place for informal interactions and conversations among diverse generations within the local community.

This renovation exemplifies how architecture can honor its roots while evolving to meet contemporary needs. By preserving the soul of the original bathhouse and integrating thoughtful modern touches, MABI ARCHITECTS has created a space that celebrates history, promotes wellness, and strengthens community bonds. It serves as an inspiring model for future projects aiming to revitalize cultural heritage in an innovative and sustainable manner.

Norman Foster's Riviera Villa: A Masterpiece on the Market

Nestled on the picturesque waterfront hillside of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France, Villa La Voile, a property with a rich history and significant architectural importance, has been listed for a staggering €29.5 million. Initially constructed in the 1950s, this exquisite 480-square-meter residence underwent a transformative redesign between 1998 and 2002 under the discerning eye of its former proprietor, the renowned architect Norman Foster. The villa stands as a testament to Foster's unique vision in residential design, seamlessly blending grand steel arches, extensive glass panels, and an innovative retractable canopy resembling a ship's sail, all meticulously crafted to capture breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

The design of Villa La Voile brilliantly exploits its challenging, steep terrain, organizing its various living spaces across seven distinct levels, each offering a continuous connection to the mesmerizing seascape. The interiors are bathed in natural light, thanks to impressive double-height ceilings and a striking four-level atrium, while floor-to-ceiling windows act as living frames for the dramatic coastal panoramas. The villa's architectural signature is defined by its robust steel arches and transparent glass facades. A highlight is the retractable canopy, which not only provides shade but also visually evokes a ship's sail, giving the property its evocative name, 'La Voile,' French for 'the sail,' and reinforcing its deep connection to the maritime environment. The outdoor terraces, positioned on different elevations, extend the living areas, providing dynamic perspectives of the sea and the meticulously sculpted landscape that flows down the hillside, offering both openness and seclusion. A rooftop infinity pool further enhances the experience, seemingly merging with the vast expanse of the Mediterranean. Inside, the villa boasts a two-story library, a central four-level atrium that floods the home with light, and a distinctive MudWork fresco by British artist Richard Long, artfully connecting the interiors with the surrounding natural beauty. Beyond its principal living zones, the estate includes five bedrooms, a self-contained apartment, and comprehensive garage facilities.

Villa La Voile represents more than just a luxurious dwelling; it is a harmonious synthesis of human creativity and natural splendor. Its design not only respects but enhances the dramatic beauty of the French Riviera, providing an unparalleled living experience that inspires tranquility and a profound appreciation for its surroundings. The villa embodies a sophisticated dialogue between interior comfort and the grandeur of the external landscape, encouraging a lifestyle attuned to both refined design and the invigorating embrace of nature.
