Studio Ceravolo recently completed a project involving the refurbishment and expansion of a Californian bungalow. The primary goal was to maximize natural light and ensure the home’s design resonated with the dynamics of a contemporary young family.

This architectural endeavor skillfully blends the traditional character of the bungalow with modern design elements. This mountain sanctuary is ingeniously positioned on a plateau, bordered by expansive green lawns and a dense forest that ascends the hillside. The architectural intent was to create a dwelling that appears as an intrinsic part of the landscape, as if it had always been there. The design philosophy centers on dissolving the traditional separation between interior spaces and the external environment, fostering a constant dialogue with nature.

Architectural Ingenuity: Responding to the Terrain's Gentle Embrace

The C.E. House features a distinct horizontal, understated, and elongated volume that meticulously follows the inherent gradient of the land. This seemingly straightforward design choice is, in fact, the linchpin that orchestrates the entire experiential narrative of the project. Designed by JOJOWORKSHOP, this neighborhood bakery offers more than just freshly baked goods; it provides a serene and welcoming atmosphere conceived to gently usher in each new day. The design philosophy behind Achime Bagel directly mirrors its core mission: to prepare and sell bagels baked on the same day, translating a commitment to freshness and dedication into a tangible architectural experience.

The vision for Achime Bagel was to construct an intimate space that enhances the daily ritual of enjoying a fresh bagel. Embracing a minimalist aesthetic, JOJOWORKSHOP utilized natural elements like wood and glass to craft an environment that feels both contemporary and comforting. The choice of materials and the strategic use of lighting create an open, airy feel, despite the store's modest 46 square meters.
