Nvidia's Auto Division Head Discusses Self-Driving, Chinese EVs, and Lidar Necessity

Xinzhou Wu, the head of Nvidia's automotive division, recently shared his perspective on the transformative changes occurring within the automotive sector. He emphasized the industry's progression from "software-defined vehicles" to "AI-defined vehicles," where artificial intelligence plays a pivotal role in redefining vehicle capabilities. He confirmed that while vision-based systems like Tesla's have made significant strides, Nvidia believes lidar remains crucial for achieving robust Level 4 autonomy, especially for diverse operational design domains. Despite internal competition for computing resources and the broader geopolitical trade complexities, Nvidia remains committed to investing in autonomous vehicle technology, aiming to make self-driving a widespread reality in less than five years.
