OpenAI Introduces Codex Micro: A Specialized AI Coding Keypad




OpenAI has officially launched its first consumer hardware product, the Codex Micro, a compact mechanical keypad, diverging from expectations of a more advanced device co-developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive. This new peripheral, a result of a collaboration with Work Louder and sold through OpenAI's 'Supply Co.' storefront, is priced at $230 and is specifically engineered to augment the functionality of OpenAI's Codex coding assistant.
The Codex Micro is a 13-key controller equipped with unique features tailored for developers. It includes a rotary dial that allows users to fine-tune the AI's 'reasoning level' and a joystick to activate various coding workflows, such as reviewing pull requests or debugging. Additionally, it boasts programmable command keys for actions like accepting or rejecting code suggestions, and its RGB backlighting dynamically changes color to indicate the status of an active Codex session. This device, which comes with 32 interchangeable keycaps and supports both Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity, is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems, with pre-orders estimated to ship on July 24.
