Crafting the interior of a museum involves an intricate negotiation between the distinct requirements of the collection and the expectations of its visitors. Artifacts demand protection and precise presentation, while the spaces housing them must remain welcoming, easy to navigate, and captivating. Key design considerations such as spatial arrangement, visitor movement pathways, robust security measures, optimal lighting, structural stability, and integrated technology are all subtly woven into the design fabric, ensuring they support rather than overshadow the exhibits.
A Comprehensive Revitalization: Unveiling the Transformed Natural History Museum Oslo
After an extensive multi-year renovation, the Natural History Museum in Oslo reopened its doors in May 2022. It now proudly displays over 2,500 artifacts across approximately 2,300 square meters. The exhibition journey unfolds across three levels, encompassing six distinct themed galleries, with the captivating Crystal Cave offering a separate immersive experience in the basement. Atelier Brückner spearheaded the exhibition design, scenography, and graphic elements, while barth meticulously crafted the interior components, including display cases, furniture, and architectural features. The architectural overhaul of the historical building was expertly managed by 4B Arkitekter.
Designing Around the Artifacts: When the Collection Dictates the Structure
In a museum setting, the artifacts themselves often serve as fundamental architectural parameters. The size, weight, fragility, and specific viewing requirements of a mineral, fossil, meteorite, or dinosaur skeleton can profoundly influence the surrounding structural design. The Oslo collection notably features exceptionally large exhibits, necessitating display systems capable of accommodating objects up to five meters in length. Certain installations demanded substantial structural reinforcement, and large glass panels and display cases were engineered to withstand significant loads.
barth's contributions included expansive display islands and showcases, distinctive spherical vitrines, tall display cases with integrated media solutions, interactive tables, and custom-designed furniture. At this scale, the display case transcends its traditional role to become an integral part of the museum's architecture itself. It functions simultaneously as a protective enclosure, a sophisticated technical system, and a strategic tool for directing visitor attention. Throughout the galleries, these varied display formats are combined with asymmetrically arranged exhibition walls, creating a dynamic spatial progression while steadfastly maintaining the exhibits as the central focus.
Seamless Security: Protecting Treasures Without Visible Intrusion
At its core, a museum's mission includes paramount protection of its collections. However, the security measures implemented should ideally be inconspicuous, not the first element visitors perceive. A successful display system must offer robust security and physical stability while fostering an unhindered visual connection between the viewer and the artifact. This delicate balance is particularly evident in the mineral gallery. Here, new showcases were meticulously integrated with existing display cases, adhering to stringent security protocols, yet their technical components were deliberately hidden from view. Alexandra Vassilakou, Architect and Project Manager for Exhibition Design at Atelier Brückner, emphasizes, "The concealed technology remains unseen by visitors. This is a crucial quality for a display case, ensuring that the object itself remains paramount."
Navigating Deep Time: Guiding Visitors Through Billions of Years
A natural history museum presents a unique challenge in conveying both physical and temporal scale. Effectively communicating 4.5 billion years of Earth's history requires more than merely assembling a vast collection of objects. In Oslo, the galleries explore themes such as the evolution of life, minerals and rocks, the history of oceans, narratives from space, and the Earth's dynamic geological processes. Imposing specimens act as visual anchors, while strategically placed exhibition walls, suspended elements, furniture, and display cases segment the galleries into smaller, more manageable sequences. A well-designed guidance system and a clear textual hierarchy further aid orientation, with specialized "Family" and "Expert" trails offering diverse pathways through the content. As Alexandra Vassilakou explains: "Everything is interconnected with the evolution of life. In the exhibition, we have endeavored to clarify these connections and make them tangible for visitors."
This thoughtful arrangement facilitates both continuous movement and moments for contemplation. Visitors can follow the primary route, pause at individual displays, or dedicate more time to artifacts that capture their interest. Thus, for a museum, circulation is not merely about guiding people physically through a building, but also about shaping how they engage with and absorb information.
Harmonizing Old and New: Adapting Within a Historic Edifice
The exhibition architecture also had the intricate task of respecting the character of the historic building. The museum is situated within one of two symmetrical, listed structures in Oslo's Botanical Garden, originally inaugurated in 1920. The existing room layouts, fixtures, display cases, and flooring were carefully preserved. Furthermore, the building's tall windows maintain a visual link between the galleries and the surrounding landscape, allowing natural daylight to illuminate the exhibition spaces.
Consequently, new display systems and spatial interventions are artfully placed alongside historic architectural elements rather than replacing them. Natural daylight contributes significantly to the ambiance of the main galleries, complemented by strategic exhibition lighting. Spotlights and integrated lighting within the display cases are positioned to be visually unobtrusive, ensuring they enhance rather than distract from the exhibits.
The Crystal Cave: Crafting an Immersive Subterranean Journey
In the museum's basement, the Crystal Cave offers a distinct, daylight-free environment where artificial light becomes an integral part of the narrative. Visitors step into a walk-in installation, traversing a grated bridge through a meticulously recreated crystal cave that incorporates approximately 20 tonnes of minerals. The adjacent Artificial Cave features wall-integrated showcases designed to mimic crystalline forms, while the Glowing Cave utilizes UV light to reveal the mesmerizing glow of fluorescent minerals.
For this installation, barth expertly executed three-dimensional wall constructions, custom-designed entrance and exit portals, a glass balustrade for the bridge, and other bespoke exhibition elements. Here, structure, materials, lighting, and visitor flow are intimately intertwined with the overall experience. While other parts of the museum allow architecture to recede, granting prominence to individual specimens, in the Crystal Cave, the architecture itself becomes an essential component of the visitor's immersive journey.
Beyond the visible specimens, showcases, graphics, and interactive elements lies a sophisticated network of structural systems, security mechanisms, lighting, media integration, and other technical infrastructure. Far from erasing the original character of the historic building, the new exhibition thoughtfully adds another architectural layer, meticulously shaping how the collection is protected, understood, and experienced. Ultimately, a museum's architecture is not solely about what visitors observe, but rather about the comprehensive framework that facilitates their gaze and comprehension.
