Construction is advancing on the new Gothenburg Grand Central, conceived by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, which is set to become a vital western gateway. This development is a core component of the expansive West Link commuter rail initiative in Gothenburg, encompassing an 8-kilometer railway stretch and three new stations: Centralen, Haga, and Korsvägen. This new route is projected to significantly boost passenger capacity during peak periods and reduce travel times for both commuter and regional trains, offering direct connections to the existing central station and the Nils Ericson Terminal. The new station is anticipated to commence operations alongside Västlänken's Centralen underground station in December 2026, with office occupants moving in by 2027, and the remainder of the tunnel expected to be in use by December 2030.

The structure, now progressing into its pivotal construction phase, will serve as the primary entrance area positioned above the new underground commuter station, Västlänken. Furthermore, the existing station and Nils Ericson Terminal will be seamlessly integrated and accessible from within the new building.

A facade composed of reclaimed bricks, characterized by deep vertical grooves and expansive arched openings, is now becoming visible as scaffolding is progressively removed. The architects deliberately selected this brickwork to impart a tangible quality to the building and to echo Gothenburg’s rich history of railway architecture and public infrastructure. The structural framework is a fusion of timber, steel, and concrete, incorporating 9,100 square meters of cross-laminated timber (CLT) already integrated into the completed sections. The station's main hall will feature generous daylighting through large glazed areas, where concrete arches, timber elements, and refined surfaces are designed to create a clear and intuitive environment for travelers.

The material selection for the building is intended to mitigate its environmental footprint. Approximately 600,000 bricks were utilized, complemented by repurposed steel as an alternative to new steel.
