A San Francisco residence, initially envisioned with a "Star Trek" aesthetic following a significant renovation decades ago, has undergone a remarkable transformation by designer Christine Lin. Tasked with updating the home while preserving its futuristic essence, Lin successfully blended modern elements with the existing sci-fi theme. Her approach focused on softening the original bold and metallic interiors with warm materials and introducing new functional spaces tailored to the current owners' needs.
From a space-station-like kitchen to a "Dune"-inspired primary suite, each area of the house now tells a unique story. Lin meticulously refined material choices, such as replacing holographic flooring with biodegradable linoleum and incorporating maple cabinetry. The redesign also included adding practical amenities like a nursery and a dedicated office, all while maintaining a harmonious balance between the home's unconventional past and its sophisticated present.
Reimagining a Sci-Fi Sanctuary

Thematic Rooms and Thoughtful Details
The redesign extended to every corner of the 5,000-square-foot home, with each room crafted to offer a distinct thematic experience. The double-height kitchen and dining area, conceived as a space station atrium, became the central hub, where bright yellow accents were replaced with elegant silver, and the flooring was updated to biodegradable linoleum. Lin maximized storage by installing custom maple and stainless steel cabinetry, complete with a coffee bar, ensuring both functionality and a cohesive aesthetic. A notable art piece by Margo Wolowiec, a woven painting, was strategically placed to give the illusion of "a window looking back to Earth," reinforcing the celestial theme.
Upstairs, the primary bedroom suite draws inspiration from the subterranean villages depicted in "Dune," featuring a monochromatic palette of sandy hues, limewash walls, and travertine surfaces in the adjoining two-part bathroom. This design choice creates a serene, cavern-like atmosphere, enhanced by custom furnishings and carefully chosen vintage pieces. Another guest bedroom offers a completely different ambiance, embracing an Art Nouveau style with rich textures and botanical wallpaper, reflecting a "new Earth" concept. Throughout the home, custom-made furniture, along with new and vintage selections, seamlessly integrates with pieces already owned by the residents, resulting in a personalized and thoughtfully curated interior that perfectly aligns with the family’s vision.
