Architectural Marvel: House Over the Hills by Diogo Aguiar Studio

Nestled within the scenic Serras do Porto, the 'House Over the Hills' by Diogo Aguiar Studio stands as a testament to innovative modular timber construction. This unique residence, with a footprint of 200 square meters, was brought to life in 2023. Its design ethos thoughtfully engages with the surrounding mountainous landscape, employing a clever interplay of identical, angular volumes whose sloped planes evoke the very peaks visible from afar. The initial blueprint called for a three-bedroom dwelling, cleverly integrated across five distinct modules, complemented by three additional standalone modules accessible from the exterior, ensuring a adaptable living environment for evolving needs.

The core concept behind the 'House Over the Hills' centers on a modular timber construction approach, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency. Each module is meticulously crafted to contribute to the overall aesthetic, which subtly echoes the rugged beauty of the Portuguese hills. The strategic orientation of the house towards the southwest maximizes natural light and offers panoramic views of the verdant terrain. This design choice not only enhances the inhabitant's connection to nature but also optimizes energy efficiency within the home.

Diogo Aguiar Studio's vision extended beyond mere functionality, aiming for a harmonious blend of built form and natural context. The use of timber as a primary material speaks to a commitment to organic textures and a warm, inviting interior atmosphere. The architectural team, led by Diogo Aguiar himself and Daniel Mudrák, with design contributions from Adrian Lopéz, Carolina Fiúza, and Christos Gyftopoulos, meticulously planned each element. Structural engineering was overseen by PENREA / Rui Nuno Salgueiro, and the construction was expertly executed by Grupo Grandys and Somaia, all contributing to the seamless realization of this architectural gem.

Located in Aguiar de Sousa, Portugal, the house is more than just a dwelling; it's an architectural dialogue with its environment. The inclusion of independent modules provides a foresightful solution for homeowners seeking flexibility—whether for guest accommodations, a home office, or simply a quiet retreat. This adaptable design ensures the home can gracefully evolve with its occupants' lifestyles, underscoring a thoughtful consideration for longevity and changing requirements.

The 'House Over the Hills' is a prime example of contemporary residential architecture that prioritizes contextual integration, material honesty, and functional adaptability. Its modular construction, timber materiality, and strategic orientation create a home that is both visually striking and deeply rooted in its spectacular natural setting. The careful orchestration of forms and spaces reflects a profound respect for the landscape, making it a truly exceptional dwelling in the Portuguese countryside.
