In the historic Iguchido district of Ikeda, Osaka, a remarkable architectural transformation has breathed new life into two long-standing, once-forgotten timber structures. Spearheaded by Coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects, this ambitious project, named "Ichizu," has converted these dilapidated outbuildings, hidden behind a family residence, into a dynamic shared kitchen and communal area. This endeavor marks the first step in a phased strategy to revitalize an inherited family estate, making it accessible to the public while meticulously safeguarding its distinctive character and the rich tapestry of its history.

The property, which has been passed down through generations, encompasses a parking zone, the primary dwelling, and a storehouse situated facing the street. Beyond these existing structures, an open field stretches towards the rear of the land, where the two small wooden outbuildings, once obscured by dense vegetation, stand. These modest constructions had previously served as temporary accommodation for those in need, provided by the client's grandfather, before falling into disuse and succumbing to the encroachment of nature over many years.

Instead of opting for demolition and reconstruction, or a complete restoration to a pristine earlier state, the architectural vision for Ichizu focused on embracing and highlighting the physical imprints of time etched into the site. The existing weathered corrugated steel cladding, a silent witness to the property's long narrative, was consciously retained. This decision allows the visible signs of age to serve as a tangible record of its evolution. Complementing these historical elements, new architectural interventions were introduced, specifically designed to meet the demands of modern utility and resilience. Features such as doors, internal finishes, and kitchen facilities were meticulously upgraded using bespoke timber joinery, lauan plywood, stainless steel, and mill-scale steel. This carefully curated material palette intentionally establishes a subtle yet striking contrast between the newly integrated components and the patinated surfaces of the original structures, fostering a harmonious dialogue where the old and the new coexist seamlessly.

The journey through the Ichizu property mirrors its established layout. Guests navigate past the main house and the storehouse before arriving at the open field, where the newly reimagined buildings gradually come into view. This sequential unfolding preserves the spatial depth inherent to the site, simultaneously introducing new public activities into an area that had historically remained private. Today, Ichizu functions not only as a communal kitchen but also as a welcoming space for visitors to gather, relax, or simply enjoy the adjacent garden. This project is an integral part of a broader, incremental approach aimed at reactivating the entire estate. The previously underutilized field has been transformed into Wells Garden, a shared green space, while the existing street-facing storehouse has undergone a sensitive renovation and now operates as Tsuru no Negoto, a specialized shop offering antiques and vintage apparel. While each of these components currently operates independently, future plans include the construction of an additional kitchen near the main residence, which will serve to further integrate food preparation, the garden, and various communal activities throughout the property.

The underlying philosophy of this project deviates from a singular, comprehensive redevelopment. Instead, it involves assigning fresh purposes to the existing buildings and landscape over an extended period. The name "Ichizu," which translates to steadfast dedication, beautifully encapsulates the intention behind this endeavor: to cherish and preserve inherited architecture, adapting it for future generations through thoughtful, site-specific transformations. Beyond the architectural design itself, Studio Coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects also played a pivotal role in developing the distinct visual identities and logos for Ichizu, Wells Garden, and Tsuru no Negoto. Furthermore, the client actively participated in the inaugural Ikeda Women's Network (IWN) capacity-building program, organized by the City of Ikeda, and was awarded an IWN Challenge Grant, providing crucial support for the overarching initiative to rejuvenate the property.

The installation is a tribute to the lake's poetic moniker, 'the last tear of the Atlantic,' and subtly intertwines with the symbolism of enduring love, referencing a renowned jewelry brand's philosophy.

Reflections of Love and Nature: An Interactive Landmark at Sayram Lake

Situated gracefully beside the expansive 1,314 square kilometer alpine lake in Xinjiang, China, the 'Heart of Sayram Lake' installation by Zhide Architectural Design Consulting (Beijing) Co., Ltd. transcends mere observation, inviting engagement and personal contribution. This landmark sculpture, envisioned as a colossal water droplet, features concentric ripple patterns emanating from its base, reminiscent of a single drop disturbing the water's tranquil surface. At its core, two intertwined rings symbolize enduring partnership, bridging the majestic natural setting with the profound meaning of commitment. Constructed predominantly from polished mirrored metal, the installation masterfully reflects the panoramic splendor of Sayram Lake's surroundings—from the snow-capped peaks and verdant grasslands to the azure lake itself and the visitors who come to admire it. This reflective quality ensures the artwork is never static, constantly transforming with the shifting light, prevailing weather, and changing seasons. Complementing the lustrous metal, hollow elements of crimson wire mesh introduce a vibrant contrast, adding warmth to the cool, highland palette. The installation is ingeniously designed to be interactive, particularly for couples. Visitors are encouraged to place stones from Sayram Lake and bespoke heart-shaped locks from DR inside designated compartments. As these tokens accumulate, their engraved messages and designs gradually become visible, weaving individual stories into the broader artistic narrative. These filled compartments can then be arranged, allowing each contribution to become a part of the evolving, modular landscape of the artwork. The color scheme draws directly from the natural hues of Sayram Lake: the crystalline blue of the water, the pristine white of snow-covered mountains, the lush green of meadows, and the soft tones of the sky. The mirrored surfaces brilliantly capture the alpine environment's clarity and dynamic atmosphere, while the striking red mesh injects a visually warm element, harmonizing with the cooler natural tones. As time progresses, the installation's appearance is continually shaped by environmental factors. The play of sunlight, drifting clouds, the whisper of the wind, and the delicate touch of frost and snow alter the reflections and the overall look of the mirrored panels, creating a distinct visual experience throughout the year. Far from being a static art piece, 'Heart of Sayram Lake' is a living, breathing artwork that responds to and is sculpted by the natural processes and ever-changing conditions of its lake environment.
