Despite the efficiency and cost-effectiveness offered by mass production and automation, the authenticity and unique narrative embedded within handcrafted elements remain irreplaceable. Architects today are increasingly keen to highlight the skilled labor, innovative material uses, and the seamless integration of digital technologies with traditional craft practices. This approach unveils the intricate dance between manual creation and automated processes, showcasing the evolution of tools and methodologies across diverse projects and scales.
Amass Studio's Vision: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Architectural Innovation
Established in Chengdu in 2018, Amass Studio stands as a testament to multidisciplinary design, spanning small-scale architectural endeavors, interior designs, and exhibition environments. The studio is dedicated to merging conceptual ideas with tangible built results, employing an experimental and open design philosophy. Recognizing the interconnected nature of architectural practice, Amass Studio broadens its scope through publications, workshops, and product research, pushing the boundaries of conventional design.
Transforming Existing Structures: The Integration of New Spatial Elements
Projects like 'Spring Patio' exemplify Amass Studio's commitment to seamlessly integrating novel spatial elements into pre-existing building frameworks. Concurrently, a series of interior projects redefine design principles by reinterpreting urban construction techniques as integral spatial features. These spaces, designed to emulate workshops, factories, or marketplaces, prioritize flexibility and adaptability, facilitating a wide array of activities and interactions. The material palette itself plays a crucial role, with textures, colors, and finishes contributing significantly to the overarching architectural experience.
OnLand Shanghai: A Retail Space Reimagined as a Dynamic Workshop
This retail environment in Shanghai, dedicated to folk craftsmanship and everyday objects, draws inspiration from the workshop typology. Instead of static shelving, the interior features a flexible system of mobile and reconfigurable display units, ensuring continuous adaptation to evolving needs. For instance, fan-shaped folding display tables serve dual purposes as screens and exhibition surfaces, capable of folding, rotating, and shifting to accommodate hanging, showcasing, zoning, and circulation within a single element.
This innovative strategy allows for a diverse range of items to be exhibited under various conditions, all unified by a system that offers straightforward yet effective solutions. The harmonious coexistence of industrial and handcrafted elements transforms the space into an active workshop rather than a conventional retail interior.
OnLand: Urban Ingenuity Reflected in Flexible Display Systems
Once again focusing on folk craftsmanship and handmade items, and eschewing fixed display solutions, this project draws cues from the dynamic urban landscape. Observing how street vendors, repair shops, and small businesses employ simple materials and improvised structures to overcome practical challenges, the architectural design adopts these direct and efficient methods. This informal design logic is then reinterpreted and integrated within the space.
The display system comprises a collection of adapted prototypes. Platform carts are repurposed as mobile display units, while a structure fashioned from two ladders and a horizontal bar forms the primary framework for hanging and exhibiting objects. A central table, reminiscent of workbenches constructed from repurposed factory materials, serves as the main display surface. Collectively, these elements forge a highly flexible and functional environment that celebrates the resourcefulness and ingenuity embedded in everyday construction practices.
Amass Workroom: An Adaptable Workspace for Evolving Needs
Situated within a residential complex in Chengdu, this project was envisioned as a spatial system capable of evolving over time. A lightweight steel framework emerges as the defining feature, simultaneously acting as partitions, display surfaces, storage solutions, and work interfaces. Its magnetic properties facilitate the direct attachment of drawings, samples, tools, and lighting fixtures, transforming the walls into continuously evolving information hubs. The demountable partitions allow for easy reconfiguration of the space to meet future demands.
This philosophy extends throughout Amass Studio's own workspace, which was born not out of a need for expansion but from a profound reevaluation of the studio's working methods and the understanding that spaces must perpetually adapt to new projects, materials, and collaborative approaches. Functions are intentionally open-ended, fostering a flexible work environment that constantly reinterprets a standardized set of materials and components.
Senpop: A Retail Experience Redefining Production and Display
This project reimagines production and distribution processes, transforming the retail store into a hybrid space that integrates elements of a factory, warehouse, and traditional shop. Located in Chengdu, the design meticulously considers the entire product lifecycle, from knitting and sorting to storage and transportation. These distinct processes are deconstructed into spatial elements and then reassembled within the store. For example, the central island, inspired by the mechanics of forklifts and pallet handling, replaces conventional sales counters. The display system's inherent mobility and reconfigurability allow for seamless adaptation to shifting requirements.
The material strategy incorporates recycled fabric processed into resin panels, embedded with sample socks. These elements function not merely as primary display fixtures but as tangible records of the production process itself. By translating the logic of manufacturing and storage into spatial organization, the project is structured as a collection of distributed units rather than attempting to replicate a complete industrial environment.
