Artist Jesus Mari Lazkano Explores Environmental Shifts Through "Azken Natura" Exhibition

Artist Jesus Mari Lazkano's latest solo exhibition, 'Azken Natura,' at the Basque Luxury Studio in San Sebastián, Spain, offers a profound artistic commentary on the evolving state of our natural environment. This compelling showcase, which began on September 11, brings together six significant paintings created between 2021 and 2026, alongside a screening of his animated short film, 'Natura Fugit.' The 22-minute film, which premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2025, is the culmination of four years of dedicated work, involving nearly 3,000 individual drawings by Lazkano meticulously illustrating the ongoing recession of the Alpine glacier, Mer de Glace. Through this multi-faceted presentation, Lazkano extends his distinctive pictorial style into the dynamic realm of moving images, providing a unique perspective on landscapes in transition.
The exhibition, titled 'The Last Ice,' features five acrylic paintings on canvas and one pastel and colored-pencil drawing on paper. These works collectively examine the environment as a dynamically changing physical entity, prompting critical questions about our engagement with and utilization of nature. Lazkano’s pieces vividly portray landscapes, reality, and surrounding ecosystems in states of profound alteration, contemplating a future where familiar natural settings may no longer exist in their current forms. This artistic endeavor seamlessly connects Lazkano's visual storytelling with broader global dialogues concerning human environmental stewardship and its profound consequences, making 'Azken Natura' a poignant reflection on ecological change.
'Azken Natura' ingeniously uses the medium of visual art to contextualize environmental shifts. While scientific and political discussions often dominate this critical subject, the exhibition consciously shifts focus to the emotional and communicative aspects. Through painting and animation, Lazkano transforms complex environmental data and physical alterations into accessible visual narratives, fostering public and cultural discourse. The exhibition also probes the function of visual culture during periods of significant global transformation. As emerging environmental challenges reshape societal perspectives, artists like Lazkano play a crucial role in crafting imagery and visual references that help us comprehend and represent these profound changes. The blend of large-scale paintings, drawings, and animation in 'Azken Natura' effectively constructs this vital visual framework, serving as the eighth exhibition organized by Basque Luxury, which champions local culture through its varied artistic programs.
Lazkano's 'Azken Natura' exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of art's capacity to transcend conventional boundaries and illuminate pressing global issues. By focusing on the emotional and visual impact of environmental change, it encourages viewers to forge a deeper, more personal connection with the natural world and consider their role in its preservation. This artistic dialogue fosters a sense of responsibility and inspires collective action towards a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with our planet.
