The Avlí Houses: Modern Cypriot Courtyard Living

Embrace Modern Cypriot Courtyard Living
Reimagining the Traditional Cypriot Courtyard House for Contemporary Lifestyles
The Avlí Houses project, whose name "Avlí" (Αυλή) signifies courtyard in Greek, represents a thoughtful reinterpretation of Cyprus's enduring courtyard house typology. This design philosophy aims to cultivate a modern, multi-generational retreat for summer enjoyment, deftly balancing the need for collective family interaction with the desire for personal privacy, all centered around a shared exterior space.
Architectural Vision: Ona i Ona Architecture and Design's Approach to Integrated Living Spaces
Ona i Ona Architecture and Design spearheaded this innovative project, bringing to life a vision that prioritizes both openness and enclosure. Eleni Flouri and Laoura Maria Fotiou, the lead architects, meticulously crafted spaces that encourage social engagement while providing tranquil zones for individual contemplation. Their approach is evident in the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas, redefining contemporary living in a Mediterranean context.
Project Specifications and Materiality: A Blend of Wood and Concrete in a 220 m² Residence
Completed in 2025, The Avlí Houses encompass an area of 220 square meters. The material palette predominantly features a striking combination of wood and concrete, which not only contributes to the houses' modern aesthetic but also pays homage to traditional Cypriot building elements. This fusion of materials ensures durability and a timeless appeal, reflecting the architects' commitment to both form and function.
Fostering Multi-Generational Harmony: Designing for Shared Experiences and Personal Retreats
At the heart of the Avlí Houses' design lies a deep understanding of multi-generational living. The central courtyard acts as a communal nexus, inviting family members to gather and share moments, while the surrounding architectural layout ensures that each resident can find their own private sanctuary. This careful balance promotes both connection and independence, creating an ideal setting for a harmonious family life.
The Essence of Avlí: Where Communal Life and Individual Solitude Converge
The core concept of the Avlí Houses is to create a dynamic interplay between communal living and individual space. The design thoughtfully integrates various zones, from expansive shared areas to intimate private quarters, all interconnected by the unifying element of the courtyard. This design philosophy not only honors Cypriot heritage but also provides a versatile and comfortable living environment for its inhabitants.
