Dạ Homestay: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Hue

Dạ Homestay, conceived by 3fconcept, is an architectural marvel situated in Vĩ Dạ, Hue City, Vietnam. This project offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional Vietnamese aesthetics, aiming to preserve the area's rich cultural heritage amidst increasing urbanization. Spanning 285 square meters, it embodies a harmonious dialogue between vernacular design principles and modern architectural expression, serving as a unique accommodation and a cultural beacon.

Bridging Eras: Traditional Charm Meets Contemporary Living

Embracing Vĩ Dạ's Cultural Essence Through Architectural Storytelling

Vĩ Dạ, a locality within Hue City, Vietnam, is deeply imbued with historical and cultural significance, often celebrated in local poetry and art. However, this inherent identity is gradually diminishing due to rapid urbanization, which tends to replace the area's pristine and rustic allure with generic cityscapes. In response to this, Dạ Homestay was envisioned. Located on a 285m² plot within a compact alley, its purpose extends beyond simply providing lodging; it serves as a medium to safeguard and articulate the ancient capital's cultural legacy through an architectural narrative that skillfully weaves together traditional vernacular elements with striking contemporary design.

Architectural Vision: Harmonizing Past and Present

The design philosophy behind Dạ Homestay centers on creating a coherent visual language that respects Vĩ Dạ's past while embracing its future. The architects at 3fconcept have meticulously studied local building traditions, integrating elements such as natural ventilation, local materials, and traditional motifs into a modern framework. This approach ensures that the structure feels both authentic to its surroundings and progressive in its aesthetic. The building's layout and material choices reflect a deep understanding of Vietnamese cultural values and the functional needs of a contemporary homestay.

Material Selection and Sustainable Practices

A crucial aspect of Dạ Homestay's design is its commitment to sustainability and local craftsmanship. The project incorporates locally sourced materials like wood, concrete, and stone, chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal. These materials not only reduce the environmental footprint but also connect the building directly to its geographic and cultural context. The use of natural light and ventilation is optimized to minimize energy consumption, creating a comfortable and eco-friendly environment for guests.

Interior Design: A Sanctuary of Tranquility

The interior spaces of Dạ Homestay are designed to evoke a sense of calm and introspection, drawing inspiration from traditional Vietnamese homes. Minimalist aesthetics are combined with warm textures and natural elements to create inviting and serene environments. Each room is thoughtfully furnished to ensure comfort while subtle design cues pay homage to the rich history of Hue, offering guests a unique cultural immersion experience. The integration of indoor and outdoor spaces further enhances the tranquil atmosphere, allowing nature to permeate the living areas.

Community Engagement and Cultural Preservation

Dạ Homestay is more than just a building; it is a testament to the power of architecture in fostering cultural pride and community engagement. By consciously blending traditional Vietnamese architectural elements with modern design, 3fconcept has created a space that celebrates Vĩ Dạ's unique heritage. This project stands as a model for sustainable development that respects and preserves local identity, inviting both locals and visitors to connect with the soul of Hue City in a meaningful way.

Chengdu Haiyang Road Middle School: A Campus Redefining Educational Environments

Chengdu Haiyang Road Middle School is a striking example of modern educational architecture, consciously moving away from the conventional, efficiency-driven designs often seen in urban school settings. Completed in 2023 by Changwu Architects, this institution prioritizes creating an enriching and fluid learning environment. The design ethos embraces a more relaxed, almost leisurely atmosphere, drawing inspiration from the renowned 'Wide and Narrow Alleys' of Chengdu, thereby fostering a sense of freedom and exploration among students.

Chengdu Haiyang Road Middle School: A Nexus of Innovative Design and Educational Philosophy

In 2023, the city of Chengdu, China, witnessed the inauguration of a groundbreaking educational facility: Chengdu Haiyang Road Middle School. Crafted by the visionary team at Changwu Architects, this middle school redefines the concept of a learning space. Spanning an impressive land area of 44,071 square meters and boasting a total built-up area of 59,760 square meters, the project stands as a testament to thoughtful design. The architectural firm, led by principals Cai Changze, Huang Shanchuang, and Wu Qixiang, conceived a campus that deliberately eschews rigid, corridor-centric layouts. Instead, the school features an intricate network of staggered 'streets' and 'alleys,' promoting a sense of discovery and free movement. The integration of natural light and dynamic shadow play throughout the campus creates an ever-changing backdrop for daily activities. A notable feature is the second-floor platform, offering students a unique vantage point to observe the sunset, encouraging moments of reflection and connection with their surroundings. Echoing Louis Kahn's profound observation that 'education begins with a conversation under a tree,' the school's design meticulously incorporates numerous courtyards, each adorned with a tree, facilitating informal learning and interaction in nature's embrace. The construction of this ambitious project was managed by Chengdu Tianfu New District Investment Group Co., Ltd. and China Mcc5 Group Corp., Ltd., in collaboration with the local design institute, Chengdu JZFZ Architectural Design Co., Ltd., under the client Sichuan Tianfu New District Education and Health Bureau. Photographers Right Angle Image and Arch-Exist have beautifully captured the essence of this innovative architectural endeavor.

This pioneering school design offers a valuable lesson in how physical environments can significantly influence educational outcomes. By breaking free from traditional, often restrictive, layouts, Chengdu Haiyang Road Middle School illustrates the potential for architecture to foster curiosity, encourage exploration, and cultivate a holistic learning experience. The emphasis on open spaces, natural elements, and varied pathways suggests that learning is not confined to classrooms but can occur anywhere the mind is stimulated and engaged. This approach could inspire future educational facility designs to prioritize student well-being, creativity, and a more organic integration with the natural world.
