Understanding Gen Z's Engagement with AI
In a compelling YouGov survey, commissioned by Mashable and conducted from April 10-14, 2026, among 1,697 U.S. adults who regularly engage with AI chatbots, a striking trend emerged: Generation Z exhibits the highest frequency of chatbot interaction. An impressive 37% of Gen Z respondents reported daily use, with approximately a quarter engaging multiple times a day. This extensive reliance is exemplified by individuals such as Marisol Jimenez, a computer science student at Stevens Institute of Technology, who utilizes Claude for everything from powerlifting advice and website design to introspective emotional exploration, humorously earning her the title of an 'AI power user' from her sister.
The survey further illuminated that Gen Z users are more inclined than older generations to imbue their chatbots with personal roles, viewing them as friends, therapists, or professional collaborators. Jimenez herself considers her AI a versatile tool, serving as an assistant, tutor, consultant, and even a therapist. Consequently, nearly half of Gen Z users indicated they would experience moderate to extreme adverse effects if deprived of their chatbot access, a significantly higher proportion compared to other age groups.
However, this deep integration isn't without its complexities. Jimenez recounted a 'dark period' during her use of a therapist-mimicking ChatGPT model, which led to excessive rumination on painful feelings. This experience mirrors a broader sentiment among survey participants, who described their AI relationships with terms ranging from 'tool' and 'search aid' to 'foe,' 'frustrating,' and 'annoying.' As neuroscientist Dr. Vivienne Ming suggests, effective AI engagement involves a 'cyborg-style hybrid intelligence,' where users critically challenge AI outputs rather than passively accepting them.
