Google Gemini Now Allows Users to Disable Visible AI Watermarks

Google has introduced a significant update to its artificial intelligence platforms, Gemini and Flow, empowering users to decide whether visible watermarks appear on their AI-generated images, videos, and music. This new 'Media watermark' setting provides greater flexibility, although a foundational layer of invisible identifiers, namely SynthID and C2PA metadata, will continue to be embedded within all AI-created media. This dual-layered approach aims to balance user customization with the imperative for content authenticity, ensuring that while the overt visual indicators can be removed, the AI origin of media can still be traced and verified through other means.
The recent change was confirmed by Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio, who elaborated on the functionality. When the visible watermark option is deactivated, the distinctive 'sparkle' watermark, previously located in the bottom-right corner of content produced by Google's Nano Banana and Omni models, will no longer be present. Despite this, the underlying SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata will persist. These invisible markers serve as digital fingerprints, allowing platforms like Gemini and Search to ascertain whether a piece of content originated from AI, thereby maintaining a level of transparency regarding synthetic media.
This development comes as visible watermarks have often been circumvented by users through various editing techniques. Other major AI image generators, such as those from OpenAI and Meta, have already adopted a similar strategy, foregoing visible watermarks in favor of embedded metadata. OpenAI leverages SynthID and C2PA to denote AI-generated content, while Meta has developed its proprietary Content Seal standard. Furthermore, Anthropic recently announced its commitment to applying invisible watermarks to both AI-generated text and images, signaling a broader industry trend towards discreet yet verifiable AI attribution.
Google plans to extend this new watermark setting to its Search platform in the future. However, it's important to note that this option will not be available in regions where local regulations mandate the inclusion of visible watermarks on AI-generated content. This geographical distinction highlights the evolving regulatory landscape surrounding AI and content authenticity across different jurisdictions.
