Machan: A Collaborative Community Hub in Korail

The "Machan - Korail Community Platform" represents a significant architectural endeavor by Paraa, dedicated to fostering community engagement and expression within Dhaka, Bangladesh. Situated in Ershad Maidan, one of Korail's rare open areas, this project reimagines public space as a vibrant hub for interaction and development. The design process was deeply collaborative, involving extensive input from local youth, community leaders, students, and creative professionals. Through numerous workshops and residencies, the community actively shaped the platform's vision, demonstrating a powerful model of co-creation in urban development. Completed in 2025, this 332 square meter facility stands as a testament to the transformative potential of architecture rooted in community needs and aspirations.
The genesis of Machan, a term meaning 'platform' in Bengali, perfectly encapsulates its fundamental purpose: to serve as a supportive and connective structure for the Korail community. This initiative transformed Ershad Maidan, a crucial open space, into a dynamic stage for local expression. Paraa, the architectural firm behind the project, championed a highly inclusive design methodology. This involved collaborating directly with a diverse group of stakeholders, including the energetic youth of Korail, respected community leaders, local students, and a range of creative professionals. This comprehensive engagement ensured that the final design truly reflected the needs and desires of those it would serve.
A key component of this collaborative approach was the organization of over 60 participatory workshops and residencies. These sessions brought together residents and emerging designers, fostering an environment where ideas could be freely exchanged and developed. Activities ranged from engaging storytelling sessions, where community members shared their visions and experiences, to hands-on model-making, allowing tangible representation of collective dreams. Practical construction work further involved the community, instilling a sense of ownership and pride in the developing platform. This iterative and interactive process was instrumental in shaping Machan into a space that is both functional and deeply meaningful to its users.
The project's successful realization underscores the value of integrating community voices into architectural design. By emphasizing participation and co-creation, Paraa has not only constructed a physical platform but also strengthened social bonds and empowered local residents. This approach ensures that the "Machan - Korail Community Platform" is more than just a building; it is a living embodiment of collective effort and shared identity. The 332 m² facility, slated for completion in 2025, promises to be a lasting symbol of community resilience and creativity in Dhaka.
The Machan project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to urban development, demonstrating how architecture can serve as a catalyst for social cohesion and empowerment. By actively involving the Korail community in every stage of its creation, from initial concept to hands-on construction, Paraa has crafted a space that truly resonates with its users. This collaborative model, centered on open dialogue and shared vision, has transformed a simple open area into a vibrant, multi-functional community hub, poised to inspire and connect for years to come.
