SOBO: A Multisensory Dining and Listening Experience in Paris

SOBO, a distinctive Parisian establishment designed by Studio Louis Morgan and interior architect Louis Aspar, offers an 80-square-meter plant-based dining and listening experience. This project goes beyond traditional restaurant design, aiming to create a comprehensive multisensory environment that harmoniously integrates interior aesthetics, culinary offerings, musical elements, material selections, and acoustic engineering. Inspired by the serene and intimate settings of Japanese ryokans and specialized listening cafés, the design team has imbued SOBO with a warm and inviting atmosphere. This is achieved through the extensive use of mahogany-hued oak paneling, custom-built joinery, carefully selected vintage furniture pieces, and precisely controlled lighting, all contributing to a space that feels both personal and modern.

At SOBO, sound is not merely a technical detail but is treated as an integral architectural element that shapes the overall experience. The integration of custom audio equipment and innovative plant-fiber acoustic ceiling panels significantly enhances the restaurant's acoustic comfort, fostering an ideal environment for enjoying vinyl music. Every aspect, from the architectural layout and furniture placement to the lighting scheme, acoustic treatments, and guest circulation paths, has been conceived as part of a cohesive narrative. Rather than assembling a collection of disparate decorative items, Studio Louis Morgan focused on the intricate interplay between the physical space, auditory sensations, and the guest's holistic experience. This approach exemplifies the studio's broader philosophy in hospitality design, where identity, functionality, material integrity, and experiential quality are seamlessly interwoven across various projects, including restaurants, hotels, and bars.

The interior design strategy for SOBO thoughtfully combines rich, warm tones with a modern spatial language, creating an inviting yet sophisticated setting. Vintage furniture pieces introduce a captivating contrast against the contemporary backdrop, adding layers of history and character. The bespoke elements, along with these vintage selections, culminate in a hospitality environment that is rich in texture and depth. Throughout the venue, the concept of sound as an architectural component is consistently applied, influencing every design decision. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the space's identity, practical use, material expression, and acoustic comfort are intrinsically linked, offering patrons a uniquely immersive experience. The plant-fiber acoustic ceiling panels are a key feature, specifically chosen to optimize sound control and further refine the auditory ambiance within the restaurant. The inspiration drawn from Japanese ryokans and listening cafés is evident in SOBO's intimate atmosphere, further enhanced by carefully adjusted lighting that contributes to a sense of warmth and privacy. The flow of movement within the restaurant is deliberately organized to highlight the symbiotic relationship between the physical environment and the auditory journey, making every visit a memorable encounter with refined design and sensory delight.

ERRE Architecture Expands Marina de Empresas Campus with New Harborside Building in Valencia

Marina de Empresas has substantially expanded its architectural presence at La Marina de Valencia, with ERRE architecture firm completing a third building. This new addition significantly enhances the campus's capabilities for education and entrepreneurship, which already included two structures inaugurated in 2015, also by ERRE. The recently finished volume contributes an additional 7,600 square meters of usable floor area, providing space for almost 1,000 entrepreneurs. This expansion brings the campus's total footprint to 27,000 square meters, supporting the ongoing development of EDEM, Lanzadera, and Angels, the three key initiatives that form the Marina de Empresas ecosystem.

The building's design emphasizes adaptability and multi-functionality, creating a dynamic environment suitable for diverse work and interaction styles. At its core lies a luminous triple-height atrium, spanning 260 square meters with a nine-meter ceiling, serving as the primary communal hub. This expansive area is designed for dining and can be reconfigured for presentations and events, equipped with tiered seating for 100 attendees. A striking blue metal spiral staircase anchors the atrium, seamlessly connecting all four levels and transforming vertical circulation into an integral part of the building's spatial flow.

Contemporary Workspace: Integration and Adaptability

The interior layout, conceptualized by ERRE, is meticulously crafted to foster cohesion among the diverse communities within Marina de Empresas, encompassing EDEM scholars, Lanzadera startups, companies backed by Angels, and the broader professional network. Embracing the studio’s advanced Workplace methodology, the work areas are equipped with integrated technology and maintain an open, adaptable nature. These spaces range from private focus booths for individual concentration to larger meeting rooms designed for collaborative efforts. Each floor incorporates designated 'plazas,' which are social zones offering direct outdoor access, promoting informal interactions and providing opportunities for breaks. On the ground floor, double-height workspaces amplify the sense of openness, while strategically placed interior courtyards draw natural light deeper into the building's core, enhancing the overall ambiance.

The interior aesthetic harmoniously blends a warm material palette with an industrial flair, creating a welcoming yet contemporary atmosphere. The furniture selection is versatile, accommodating various working preferences, from high tables and stools ideal for brief, spontaneous meetings to expansive shared tables facilitating collaborative projects. Carpeting is thoughtfully incorporated throughout the open areas, serving a dual purpose by adding to the aesthetic appeal while significantly contributing to acoustic treatment, effectively reducing noise levels and enhancing concentration within the vibrant workspace. This thoughtful combination of design elements underscores a commitment to functionality, comfort, and a productive environment for all users.

Coastal Connectivity: A Facade Reflecting Its Surroundings

The building's exterior design powerfully resonates with its maritime environment. The various work areas offer expansive views of the harbor and prominent historical landmarks, including the Aduana building, the Tinglados, and the iconic Clock Building, seamlessly integrating the internal spaces with the external landscape. At the rooftop level, panoramic vistas across the harbor extend the working environment outwards, creating an inspiring setting. The southern facade is distinguished by a horizontal louvered envelope, skillfully engineered to regulate solar exposure while maintaining a consistent visual rhythm across the elevation. This system thoughtfully harmonizes with the two pre-existing campus buildings, while the southeast corner features a distinctive cantilever, specifically designed to frame breathtaking views toward the sea, adding a unique architectural signature to the structure.

The horizontal louvers are constructed from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), a composite material renowned for its association with naval construction. Chosen for its exceptional lightness, strength, and durability, GRP has traditionally been utilized for boat hulls, making it a fitting choice for this waterside development. Furthermore, the project incorporates roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, emphasizing sustainability, and utilizes locally sourced materials selected for their resilience against the specific conditions of the coastal environment. The adjacent outdoor area is slated for future revitalization into a landscaped pedestrian promenade, envisioned to revolve around the historic port crane. This thoughtful urban planning initiative aims to further enhance the connection between the campus and the picturesque landscape of La Marina de Valencia, fostering a vibrant and integrated community space.

Artistic Transformation: PEYTIL's Plywood Painting Becomes Functional Furniture

Motspråk, conceived by PEYTIL and led by designer Eitil Arbenz Thorén, reimagines a painted plywood panel by transforming it into a functional seating object. This project, which materialized during Thorén's academic pursuits at Konstfack in Stockholm, showcases the transition from pure artistic creation to a practical item. Plywood was specifically chosen for its layered composition and adaptability for cutting and shaping, facilitating the innovative reconstruction process.

The essence of the plywood itself is integral to the artistic expression. The natural characteristics of the spruce, such as its grain and knots, are not merely overlooked but are intentionally integrated into the painted composition, presenting themselves as subtle organic details. This approach moves beyond considering the material as a mere blank canvas, embracing its inherent patterns and irregularities as key elements that contribute to the piece's visual narrative and final form.

This creative endeavor masterfully blends Thorén's initial artistic vision with the intrinsic qualities of the wood and the project's foundational principles. Through careful cutting and reassembly, the plywood is reshaped, allowing the distinct traits of the spruce to not only influence the painted surface but also define the ultimate structure of the chair, demonstrating a harmonious interplay between medium and message. This innovative project exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between fine art and everyday objects, enriching our living spaces with both beauty and purpose.

This project is a testament to the power of creative thinking and respect for materials, turning a simple slab of wood into a conversation piece that challenges traditional boundaries between art and utility. It encourages us to perceive the world around us with an open mind, appreciating the potential for transformation and finding beauty in the unexpected.
