Retro Brick Phone Reimagined for Digital Detox

Cologne-based designer Kevin Noki presents a novel solution to smartphone addiction with his creation, ADHD ONE, an Anti-Distraction Handset Device. This innovative gadget draws inspiration from the bulky 'brick phones' of the 1980s, featuring a physical keypad, a compact screen, and a robust form factor. Its primary objective is to offer a streamlined communication experience, deliberately limiting the array of features commonly found in contemporary mobile devices.
The underlying concept of ADHD ONE is elegantly simple. Rather than serving as a smartphone replacement, it functions as an accessory, connecting to an iPhone wirelessly through Bluetooth. This allows individuals to manage incoming and outgoing calls while keeping their primary device out of sight, effectively mitigating the temptation of endless scrolling and digital distractions. By configuring specific 'Do Not Disturb' settings on the paired iPhone, users can tailor their communication to only essential contacts, fostering a more mindful approach to phone usage.
Despite its nostalgic exterior, ADHD ONE incorporates modern electronic components. It is powered by an FSC-BT1026C Bluetooth module, based on Qualcomm's QCC3024 chip, which facilitates call audio transmission. A Raspberry Pi Pico development board oversees the device's operations, complemented by an OLED display, a microphone, a speaker, and a rechargeable lithium battery system. The entire assembly is integrated within a custom-designed, 3D-printed casing, crafted by Noki using Autodesk Fusion. This housing meticulously replicates the aesthetic of early mobile phones, complete with a prominent antenna and tactile buttons. Users can personalize their device with various speaker grille designs and antenna styles, or even opt for an antenna-less version, though that would diminish its distinctive retro appeal.
For enthusiasts eager to construct their own version of this unique device, Kevin Noki has generously provided downloadable digital fabrication files on his website. This comprehensive package includes 3D-printable STL files for the handset's components, ready-to-flash firmware, and Gerber files for manufacturing the custom PCB. A detailed bill of materials and quick start guide are also included, simplifying the sourcing and assembly process. While the files are licensed for personal use, a physical DIY kit is anticipated to be available soon. ADHD ONE embodies a fascinating blend of retro charm, experimental design, and a timely response to the increasing desire for a less distracting digital life. It encourages a thoughtful re-evaluation of our interaction with technology, proving that sometimes, less is indeed more, even if it means building a new device to escape the clutches of another.
